A Christmas Story I Want You To Know

I posted this last year, and will do so every year at Christmas. It's about my sister, and this is our 5th Christmas without her. So this is my way of remembering her, and introducing her to all of my new readers. You'd have loved her....she was the best.

I have a special Christmas story I want to share with you guys.

First, a little background...

This time six years ago, my sister Linda was in the hospital fighting for her life. She had a massive stroke on December 15th and needless to say, our holiday that year was spent basically living at the hospital. In fact, my Dad had a minor stroke three days after Linda's so for awhile we had them both in the same hospital, on different floors. Yes, it was awful.

Anyway, several years before this, Linda was out Christmas shopping, and she encountered what she deemed The Cutest Paper Towels Ever. They were Bounty's holiday ones that said "HO HO HO" on them. She, like any good Christmas decorating woman would do, grabbed herself a roll.

So she gets home, and excitedly starts telling her husband Jan how she found these darling "HO HO HO" paper towels, and proceeds to take them out of the bag to show him.

A puzzled look comes over her face as she showed them to him because lo and behold, the paper towels said...

OH OH OH

She looked at them, looked at her husband, looked back at them and said "I swear, in the store these said "HO HO HO" on them!".

She was completely mystified as to how she ended up with a roll that clearly had a misprint on them.

Meanwhile, Jan is looking at her like she's lost her mind. You have to understand, my sister was a teacher, and one of the smartest people I know. Her husband was a teacher as well, so here we have two brainiacs looking at each other...one completely baffled and the other thinking the baffled one has some serious blonde roots showing!

Linda says..."I'm driving right back over to that store and exchanging these for the ones that say "HO HO HO".

Finally, Jan quietly says....

"Linda....turn them over".

It was the funniest thing ever.

So of course that story got out, and from that day forward, everyone bought Linda Christmas things that had HO HO HO on them...and then would proceed to go around her house turning them all upside down. There was never an item in their home that didn't say OH OH OH by the time Christmas came.

Just days before her stroke, Jan had found a lighted HO HO HO to put outside on the front of their house. He was always big on decorating outside...lots of lights and stuff, so this was a perfect addition to his Christmas reportoire. He hung it up the right way, and Linda dared anyone to turn it upside down, including her husband.

So, there we were, in the hospital on Christmas Day, gathered around her bed, and she was finally awake for basically the first time in the ten days since she'd had her stroke. She was, of course, on a ventilator so she couldn't speak, but she could hear us, and understand what we were saying.

I stood there talking with her, and as a joke I said "Hey Lin, guess what? I was over at your house last night, and somebody turned the new HO HO HO that is outside on the house, upside down!"

Let me tell you something, that woman may not have been able to speak, but the dirty look she shot her husband at that moment spoke volumes. We all laughed for the first time in ten days.

We lost her on February 18, 2004, two months after she suffered that devastating stroke. She had just finally gotten off the vent and was able to talk to us, and the next day something happened that we don't know what it was, whether it was another stroke or a clot from where the vent had been dislodged and travelled to her brain, but suddenly she was gone. We were, and still are, devastated.

I have some of her HO HO HO things at home, and every year I try to carry on her tradition and buy something new to add to her collection. And every year, my son walks around my house and turns them all upside down. And we smile, and laugh, and remember the look on Linda's face when she would tell the paper towel story, and laugh at herself for her "blonde moment".

So this one's for you, sis. I love and miss you every day, all year...but at Christmas I miss your beautiful smile and laugh the most.

What a beautiful tribute to your wonderful sister. I'm so sorry for your loss, I wish I couldn't relate to your sadness but I can. I lost my 32 year old little brother almost 12 years ago and I can feel the sorrow as deeply today as the day he died. During the holidays and all year long, it never goes away.

I love your tribute, I bet she would be so tickled!

That was Beautiful Julie. I cried as I read because I could feel your loss. I too know the horrors of stroke,I fear it everyday of my life. My Daddy had a major stroke in '95 and I took care of him at home until he passed. In the middle of that I lost my Mama to a stroke in '99,she only lived 5 days and never knew any of us before she passed. My Mama adored Christmas so I have tried to keep that spirit alive to honor her. Then suddenly on Christmas day '04,my Daddy passed away. I just kept telling myself,"What a perfect day for him to go be with her" because it was her most favorite day of the year. I just knew they were dancing together. I believe we should always remember our loved ones with laughter. I think thats what they would want. You are so wise to be taking care of yourself(through diet and all)because I'm sure you know strokes run in families. I need to do the same as I have already had several light strokes but am doing good at the moment. Forgive me for rambling on,I just wanted you to know I care and understand. Your sister is with you always. Merry Chritmas Julie. This is one of my favorite quotes:

"Death leaves a heartache no one can heal.....Love leaves a memory no one can steal".

Aw, that was a treasure to read. And as you know, my baby sister is gone now too. This is our second Christmas without her. She would have gotten a HUGE kick out of your sister's story.

Warmly,

What a priceless story! I've spent more than one Christmas at the bedside of a dying relative and those little moments of normalcy mean so much. Thanks for sharing your story and prompting me to remember my own.

I loved the story. I am glad you share it every year. It is a good tribute to your sister. It always warms the heart to remember ones that have pasted with laughter.
When I remember some of my loved ones that have passed, my best memories are when we were laughing together.

Julia, you might want to sit down first. I am you Secret Santa. They say opposites attract. At this point in my life, I am not likely to receive any more proposals, so I accept yours. Tell "Joe" to move over, I am moving in. I may be old in numbers, but still young at heart and active. Without a doubt, there is no 80 year old man or woman that could keep up with you. You are one of a kind! So glad I pleased you with my gift selections. It was fun shopping for you. I wish you and family the very best during the holidays. Be careful if out for New Year as I do not want my spouse hurt. Also, your post for today is very touching and a great tribute to your sister.

Linda,
I have never commented on your blog, but I wanted to tell you how much I enjoy your humor and candor. This fall I had a total knee replacement....as I was recovering, my husband had emergency surgery for a bowel obstruction and ended up in ICU on a ventilator and in the hospital for over a month...while he was in ICU, I had to have an emergency gall bladder removal. We are both home now, doing much better, and thankful that we are both alive and able to share Christmas with our families. I also lost a sister to Multiple Sclerosis and every Christmas we miss her so much. I am sorry for your loss, and thank you for sharing your stories with us.

Merry Christmas
Sandy
