I could not say it better

I got some flack the other day for posting my displeasure at the hoopla surrounding Michael Jackson's death, and the what I consider unnecessary abundance of media coverage surrounding it.

Today I got an email that I feel needs posted. As always I welcome your comments, and I expect that not everyone shares my point of view.

Regardless, I hope you understand the message.

Yes, Michael Jackson did pass away a week ago,

...and so did:

Army SSG Paul G Smith, 43, of East Peoria, IL
Army SSG Joshua A Melton, 26, of Carlyle, IL
Army SPC Chancellor A Keesling, 25, of Indianapolis, IN

Army 1SG John D Blair, 38, of Calhoun, GA Army
SGT Ricky D Jones, 26, of Plantersville, AK
Army SGT Rodrigo A Munguia Rivas, 27, of Germantown, MD
Army SPC Casey L Hills, 23, of Salem, IL

This is written by a young soldier serving his third tour of duty in Iraq. Thought you might find his take on the Michael Jackson news interesting.

"Okay, I need to rant.

I was just watching the news, and I caught part of a report on Michael Jackson. As we all know, Jackson died the other day. He was an entertainer who performed for decades. He made millions, he spent millions, and he did a lot of things that make him a villian to many people. I understand that his death would affect a lot of people, and I respect those people who mourn his death, but that isn't the point of my rant.

Why is it that when ONE man dies, the whole of America loses their minds with grief. When a man dies whose only contribution to the country was to ENTERTAIN people, the Amercian people find the need to flock to a memorial in Hollywood, and even Congress sees the need to hold a "moment of silence" for his passing?

Am I missing something here? ONE man dies, and all of a sudden he's a freaking martyr because he entertained us for a few decades? What about all those SOLDIERS who have died to give us freedom? All those Soldiers who, knowing that they would be asked to fight in a war, still raised their hands and swore to defend the Constitution and the United States of America.

Where is their moment of silence? Where are the people flocking to their graves or memorials and mourning over them because they made the ultimate sacrifice? Why is it when a Soldier dies, there are more people saying "good riddance," and "thank God for IEDs?" When did this country become so calloused to the sacrifice of GOOD MEN and WOMEN, that they can arbitrarily blow off their deaths, and instead, throw themselves into mourning for a "Pop Icon?"

I think that if they are going to hold a moment of silence IN CONGRESS for Michael Jackson, they need to hold a moment of silence for every service member killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. They need to PUBLICLY recognize every life that has been lost so that the American people can live their callous little lives in the luxury and freedom that WE, those that are living and those that have gone on, have provided for them. But, wait, that would take too much time, because there have been so many willing to make that sacrifice. After all, we will never make millions of dollars. We will never star in movies, or write hit songs that the world will listen too. We only shed our blood, sweat and tears so that people can enjoy what they have.

Sorry if I have offended, but I needed to say it. Remember these five words the next time you think of someone who is serving in the military;

"So that others may live..."

A US Soldier

God bless you, Isaac, and all of our service men and women.

In other news...I won't be posting this weekend as I'm headed to Chicago for the Nascar race! I'll be back Monday with pictures and details!

One last thing....please keep my friend "E" in your prayers. He lost his mother this week, and lost his father just a couple of months ago. Please send him strength to get through the rough days ahead.

Have a great weekend!

THANK YOU JULIE!!!!!!! Just goes right along with my comment I posted the other day.

Thank you Isaac for helping others remember what many Americans are giving up so we can be free. MJ may have changed the face of music, but he didn't fight for our rights as Americans.

Julie, that was awesome. Thanks for sharing it...for posting the names...and just for being in tuned to the fact that even though Michael Jackson died...the world moves on....others die...others are born. I am tired of the MJ media barrage for sure.

Thank you for post. We, as a nation, need to wash a Lot of crazy assed ideas out of out head. Where is is common sense?

It's a real wake up to see all of those soldier's names listed. Three of them are from my own state, Illinois was hard hit that week. I don't think most Americans are as calloused as Isaac thinks, I think we just (stupidly, humanly) forget.

Thank you, Isaac and Julie, I am grateful for the reminder.

Thank you, Isaac, for your service to our country. I would not have the luxuries and FREEDOM I enjoy if it were not for you and your brothers-in-arms.

Great post! BTW, if you are still getting that error message when going to some blogs (I am still getting it on yours), I figured out that if you hit your back arrow on your tool bar, it will take you to the blog so that you can read it. For some reason, I get that message almost every time I visit your blog but not on others that were doing it before.

Amen sistah....I could have not said it better! I wish Americans gave 1/10 of a thought to those that have sacrified their lives so we can live in this wonderful world as they did to MJ. Thank you Isaac for your email and for serving our country. You have allowed me to live in the land of the free my friend and I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
PS Jules I saw a list of names on Nancy Grace last night..she said the same thing, "Let's take some time away from the MJ saga and let us not forget about those who have lost their lives while fighting for our country."
Have a great time this weekend..

You are so right. Isaac is so right. We can't thank them enough. We DON'T thank our soldiers enough. And really, it hurts a whole lot more to mourn so many every day, all the damn time, than one piddly pop icon.

Have fun at NASCAR. I agree with you that the men who died in service should be honored and it's a shame that we can't give each of them a moment in silence. I can't imagine what Isaac must be going through, but we cannot discount the fact that even though MJ was one person he has touched so many personally with his music. We all knew his life story since he busted out into the music world at 5 so it's hard not to feel connected and be affected by his death. Sorry I'm not trying to offend just adding our 2 cents.

Joe said to come down so he can take the both of us to the SOUL FOOD restaurant that we may say what we really think......

And enjoy NASCAR, the only 100% guaranteed place where you will NEVER EVER see Al Sharpton.

Although admittedly, I am not traditionally pro-military, I must entirely agree with the commentary made in the e-mail you shared here. I was equally disappointed in the media--about 15 mintues of every half hour news program was dedicated to MJ and his career, as if there couldn't possibly be something more important to cover in the news. This whole situation is entirely asymptomatic of the media presenting the most popular stories rather than the most important ones.

Something Violet said hit me because I feel like she's on to something: "I don't think most Americans are as calloused as Isaac thinks, I think we just (stupidly, humanly) forget."

I support the military 100% and pray for the men and women serving our country. I wish they could be home with their families and I wish they didn't have to pay the ultimate price for our freedom. I wish LW's brother was home with his family. Many of you don't know that he is on his second tour in Iraq and has been in the military for probably 20+ years now. He has been away for almost a year now. I'm proud of what he is doing for my freedom and although I don't know him yet, I love him for all he does for me.

i HEAR that!

thank you - because really - michael jackson was quite the star, but there are many other stories that deserve to be told.

Amen to you for saying it. We had a whole summer of Anna Nicole Smith and she was a D grade celebrity. I even doubt she was that high. I cannot even imagine how long this MJ thing will play out. 7 soldiers died in Afganistan the same week. We never heard a thing. My heart goes out to them.
